- Will win: “Lincoln“
- Could win: “Zero Dark Thirty“
Hard with the mixed adapted/original category, but I still say Kushner’s script for “Lincoln” prevails because it’s the most agreeable and unilaterally praised of the year.
Best Director
- Will win: Steven Spielberg, “Lincoln“
- Could win: Ang Lee, “Life of Pi“
Golden Globes love older, respected directors, so Spielberg takes it. Maybe an Ang Lee spoiler as a victory for world cinema, but I doubt that happens.
Best Picture – Musical/Comedy
- Will win: “Les Misérables“
- Could win: “Silver Linings Playbook“
The Golden Globes love a flashy musical, usually more than the Academy. While the quirky comedy may do better at the Oscars, I think tonight is a night of “Les Misérables” domination.
Best Picture – Drama
- Will win: “Lincoln“
- Could win: “Life of Pi“
Though the Critics Choice went “Argo,” I think the HFPA will go weak at the knees for baity “Lincoln.” Maybe they choose “Life of Pi,” though, like they chose “Avatar” in 2009.

- Will win: Anne Hathaway, “Les Misérables“
- Could win: Sally Field, “Lincoln“
Duh.
Best Supporting Actor
- Will win: Tommy Lee Jones, “Lincoln“
- Could win: Christoph Waltz, “Django Unchained“
Can’t make a compelling case for Hoffman or Arkin, and vote splitting might take out the men of “Django Unchained.” So I guess it’s Tommy Lee Jones.
Best Actress – Musical/Comedy
- Will win: Jennifer Lawrence, “Silver Linings Playbook“
- Could win: Meryl Streep, “Hope Springs”
Probably the biggest no-brainer of the night if for no other reason than Lawrence has zero competition.
Best Actor – Musical/Comedy
- Will win: Hugh Jackman, “Les Misérables“
- Could win: Bradley Cooper, “Silver Linings Playbook“
I give the edge to the song-and-dance man Jackman because the musical men usually come out on top.
Best Actress – Drama
- Will win: Jessica Chastain, “Zero Dark Thirty“
- Could win: Naomi Watts, “The Impossible”
With no Riva, Wallis, or Lawrence, I think Chastain glides over the competition.
Best Actor – Drama
- Will win: Daniel Day-Lewis, “Lincoln“
- Could win: Joaquin Phoenix, “The Master“
Again, duh.
6:30 P.M. Argh, was intending to update from my phone but that didn’t work. Sorry. Here are some predictions:
Best Score
- Will win: John Williams, “Lincoln“
- Could win: Mychael Danna, “Life of Pi“
Perennial favorite John Williams wins over a field with no one else established as a worthy winner.
Best Song
- Will win: Skyfall, “Skyfall“
- Could win: Suddenly, “Les Misérables“
It’s Adele, and it’s a great Bond theme. Unless they really love “Les Misérables,” this is the one category I think it won’t take.
Best Foreign Film
- Will win: “Amour“
- Could win: “The Intouchables”
The Globes usually pick the artsiest of the bunch, but never count out the possibility of them picking a crowd-pleaser.
Best Animated Film
- Will win: “Wreck-It Ralph“
- Could win: “Frankenweenie”
HFPA loves Pixar, and “Wreck-It Ralph” feels like the kind of movie that studio used to make regularly. So I’m going out on a limb and guessing it wins.
4:30 P.M. Hopefully we will be treated to this kind of fantastic chemistry and humor in just a few hours.
12:15 P.M. Before I forget, let me plug “Parks & Recreation.” Because Amy Poehler’s show is the funniest thing on (network) television, and it needs to be seen by more people. It’s a brilliantly subversive, but never preachy or cloying, political commentary – and not to mention, it has great characters and lines. I’d be willing to say it’s better than “The Office” in its prime. Just check out this clip from a few weeks ago and try not to laugh, even if you don’t know Poehler’s character Leslie Knope.
